Derry Girls

The Northern Irish Series of the Moment.

I've seen many series this days but no one like Derry Girls, i can tell that i enjoyed every single episode and i acknowledged most of the plot that is developed during the show.

First i'd like to say this series is developed and produced by Channel 4 and distributed by Netflix around the globe (Thanks Netflix, you have spread one of the greatest shows of the year for the rest of the world), Channel 4 has a vast and wide catalogue of series similar to Derry Girls, from The InBetweeners to The end Of The F***** World, Shameless, IT Crowd and many others, full of acid humour and explosive plots.

Derry Girls is written and developed by Lisa McGee, the story is set during the 90's in Derry (Londonderry, Northern Ireland) where a group of young ladies and a lad (Erin, Orla, Michelle, Clare and James) try to survive their teenage life among The Troubles (The Northern Ireland conflict).

With a good set of music to make the story more real and the fun situations among the girls, the Irish culture, and of course trying to make the IRA situation more vivid, the screenplay shows a complete set of emotions and nostalgia. Maybe that's why "Dreams" by The Cranberries is the ideal song to begin and finish this story.

With short and concrete episodes we can get deep into the lives of the Quinn family and their peers, know a lil bit of the Irish conflict and the culture around this individuals, very similar to some situation we can find in other countries. Religion, family crisis and of course the reckless teenage angst.

I praise the work on this series and its context, making the final episode of the first series such a great end, also i praise the work of their performers, from Saoirse-Monica Jackson to David Ireland.

It has been compared with Gossip Girl but i believe is more intelligent and well-done than any american show, maybe is more related and close to its elder brother The InBetweeners, without hesitate on its language, control and exposing a reality that many people lived in the Northern Ireland of the 90's. I heard the american audience is struggling with the accent and their adding subtitles, c'mon fellas, i though ye had a good and wide Irish heritage!

Because of this and many more Derry Girls is the series ye shall be watching right now!
